I saw a rose
Today I saw a rose.
I did not expect to see.
It arrived without ceremony, without warning, without a fanfare.
I assumed that it had gone, no evidence was there that it would return.
A gift, a token, replanted to give it space to grow. I don’t remember it dying, but it was no longer there.
It sat quietly, but it’s sound stopped me in my tracks.
“Hello?” I enquired. “I didn’t expect to see you again”. “Where have you been”.
“Resting, it was cold and heavy, I’ve slept. What time is it?”
“It’s summer, I said”.
“That’s nice, said the rose”.
I told my husband that the rose had come back, “Yes, I saw!” He was as surprised as me.
As surprised as me that the rose had arrived whole and complete.
I had not seen it grow, I had not watered it or tended to it weeds.
It still grew, it still grew towards the light and stood proud and held itself with courage. In a space it couldn’t yet fill.
I greet the rose every day. I bless the miracle of it’s existence.
Today I saw a rose.
